Schooled in the radical culture of the 1960s, Italian design virtuoso Ugo La Pietra has operated on the edge of the system from the ’70s onwards, inevitably from a transdisciplinary perspective. This exhaustive and richly illustrated manifesto presents 50 years of his life’s work and research, reflecting his ability to practice and experiment in a wide range of disciplines, not only architecture and design, but also cinema, painting, sculpture, music, drawing, and poetry.
This volume collects the various moments that, over time, have characterised his involvement in the evolution of the world of design, marked in thematic chapters that examine the problems and theories that have accompanied his research.
Ugo La Pietra lives and works in Milan. His thinking has been expressed in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad and he has curated various exhibitions for the Milan Triennale, the Venice Biennale, the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyon, the FRAC Centre in Orléans, the Museo delle Ceramiche in Faenza and the Fondazione Ragghianti in Lucca. He won the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. Through his work, writing and teaching he has constantly supported “local” as opposed to “internationalist” design.
