Episodic Urbanism wins Architecture in the Media Award

“It is no simple task to capture and document a project of this complexity, yet Episodic Urbanism does so with a charm that is reflective of the architectural work itself… a great delight to read.” – Bates Smart Architecture in the Media Award jury

We were wrapped to see Episodic Urbanism receive a Bates Smart Architecture in the Media prize at last Friday’s Victorian Architecture Awards. The book tells the story of how Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design has worked, over the course of nearly two decades, to turn RMIT University’s inner city premises from what was essentially a private fortress into a public-spirited urban campus.

As the jury alludes to in their citation above, capturing the story of an urban project of this nature, a project that is as much about the spaces between buildings as it is the buildings themselves, and the life within them, is a challenging ambit – not least because the Urban Spaces project extended over such a long period of time, piece-by-piece, and so many of the forces it had to contend with were largely invisible. We’d like to thank all of the contributors to the book for their deft handling of this tricky brief, their hard work and their insights.
